The legendary Smokey Robinson celebrates his 73rd birthday this week.

William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit.  Smokey is given credit as Motown's chief songwriter.  He penned many Motown classics. 

Smokey's group The Miracles also scored big with hits like "Shop Around," "You Really Got A Hold On Me," "The Tracks of My Tears" and their only #1 hit, 1971's "The Tears of a Clown." 

Smokey also scored several solo hits later in his career including "Being With You" and "Cruisin'."
