Legendary trumpeter Herb Alpert is a releasing a new album that puts a fresh spin on classic songs.

Herb says the album will mix classics from rock's first decade and the big band era on his upcoming album.  But the ace trumpeter isn't living in the past.

The Wall Street Journal spoke with him about In The Mood, which besides the title song, features "Chattanooga Choo Choo" rebooted in a trendy electronic groove.

Alpert also went on to say re-working Glenn Miller's classic follows his philosophy.  He "was never going for the beat of the week.  I was always going for that thing that was left of center, that was not quite the way everyone else was doing it."

The album will also feature Herb Alpert's take on the classics "Blue Moon," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "Let It Be Me" and "Spanish Harlem."

Alpert explains, "I like taking evergreens and seeing if I can do them in a way that's never quite been done before."  In The Mood goes on sale September 30th.

Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass hit it big in the 60s and then Herb scored his biggest hit in 1979 with the classic #1 hit "Rise."
