Poll Shows Americans Are Optimistic

A new poll says Americans are optimistic about the future, just not about politics in general.

The new NPR-PBS News Hour-Marist Poll found that 60-percent of Americans are optimistic about the world as the new year approaches, compared to 37-percent who are pessimistic. Americans who are optimistic ranked family as the main reason. Jobs, health and finance also ranked high for optimists. Last year the number of people who were optimistic was 54-percent.

Only ten-percent were optimistic about politics. For pessimistic Americans, 64-percent blamed politics for their negative outlook, while 16-percent blame the news.

The poll shows Americans are mostly focused on improving their own lives.
