Hey, don't say that!

Words can have a powerful effect on relationships. Over time, certain words and phrases can start to break down your harmony, until it’s time to call it quits. Psychotherapist Karen Helfrich explains that there are disconnecting words and phrases that trigger defenses which can cause problems, even in a healthy relationship.

These words and phrases can be in the form of a joke, critical words, or accusations. Here some to stay away from:

  • “Why did you…?”
  • “You should…”
  • “You never” or “You always”
  • “Whatever”
  • “Sorry, but…”
  • “Calm down.”
  • “Maybe we should just break up.”
