Joni Mitchell opens up about her life and early career

Joni Mitchell sat down for her first interview since her aneurysm back in 2016.The legendary singer-songwriter opened up to record executive Clive Davis.

Joni did the interview via Zoom from her home. The interview was part of Davis’ rescheduled virtual ‘Grammy Gala. ”Clive has also had his own health issues, being recently diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy.

The two musical icons discussed how Joni got started songwriting, including the writing of the classic “Both Sides Now. ”They also discussed her earliest “fantasy”-based songs and contrasted those with her more personal and confessional type songs.

Joni talked about how she was told repeatedly that her songs were simply too personal to cover. Joni went on to say that it was “just humanness” that she was “trying to describe” with those songs.

By the way, Joni Mitchell fans can enjoy a box set of her first four recordings, including The Reprise Albums (1968-1971) -- with liner notes by Brandi Carlile, who did a cover of “A Case of You” following Mitchell’s interview with Davis. The box set will be released on July 2nd.
