Rock and roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis, "The Killer," passed away at his home in Memphis. After a false report last Wednesday, Lewis’ publicist confirmed his death on Friday at age 87.
The iconic singer-pianist, who was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, had suffered from ill health for several years. He had undergone several abdominal surgeries and fought alcohol and prescription drug addiction.
Jerry Lee Lewis was born on September 27th, 1935 in Ferriday, Louisiana. He was also part of the legendary “Million Dollar Quartet” recording session with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash on December 4, 1956.
Lewis was married seven times and had multiple arrests during his life. His third marriage to a 13-year old second cousin threatened to end his career in 1957. Lewis was signed to Sun Records in Memphis. Sun Records’ roster also included Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.
Jerry Lee talked about turning 75 on his birthday back in 2010, saying, "I don't know, I've never thought that much about it, but then again I never thought I'd be 75 years old. It kind of crept up on me. I just thank God that I'm going to be 75 years old."
Jerry Lee Lewis is survived by his sons Ronnie Guy Lewis and Jerry Lee Lewis III and daughters Phoebe Lewis and Lori Lewis (Lancaster).
