Zak Starkey heads up superstar project

Zak Starkey, drummer for The Who and son of Beatles icon Ringo Starr, has orchestrated an all-star rendition of the T. Rex classic "Children of the Revolution." The cover features contributions from rock royalty, including Ringo Starr, Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses, and Elton John

The genesis of this project was captured in a snapshot shared by Starkey on Instagram, showing McKagan on bass, which heralded the collaboration. The cover's journey began in a local studio in Rio, where Starkey and McKagan laid down the bass tracks on a day that also featured a concert by The Who and Guns N' Roses. The creative process then crossed continents and studios, with guitars added by Slash in New York City and Elton John's piano mastery sent from afar.

Axl Rose will record his contribution to the project. The aim is to mix and auction the record to benefit teen cancer charities, aligning rock's powerful legacy with a noble cause.

This cover is one part of a larger charity album project, which Starkey hints will include Paul McCartney, Johnny Marr, Chrissie Hynde, Iggy Pop, and several others. The release date has not been revealed.
