Mike Love remains hopeful that his cousin and co-founder of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, could perform with them again, despite Wilson's dementia and conservatorship.
Love shared his thoughts during an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program. Mike also said he had recently seen Wilson during the band's new documentary. "He was remembering things I’d forgotten about our high school days. His long-term memory is right there," Love said, adding that Wilson's musical abilities remain intact.
However, Love acknowledged that Wilson does require medical supervision and care, a role previously filled by his late wife, Melinda Wilson, who passed away suddenly on January 30th. Despite these challenges, Love expressed a positive outlook, saying, "It’s not so negative as it sounds. As long as he’s cared for properly... It’s a brand new day now and I’m hoping we can do something together - all of us - and it’ll be great.” That sentiment was echoed by fellow Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who added, "I think once Brian and Mike sit round the piano and just the magic, you can’t stop it.”
Despite the optimism, Wilson's manager has clarified that there are currently no plans for a tour. Wilson, who turns 82 on June 20th, continues to be well cared for and is in regular contact with his children. Meanwhile, fans of the Beach Boys can look forward to the band's music streaming on Disney+ starting May 24th.
