Today marks the first-ever theatrical showing of Cameron Crowe’s documentary, Heartbreakers Beach Party, featuring Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This special event is taking place at select theaters across the U.S., offering fans a rare glimpse into the band’s history. The film, which was lost for many years, originally aired just once on MTV in 1983.
Earlier this year, the original 16mm reels of the documentary were discovered and meticulously remastered, bringing new life to this long-lost piece of rock history. In anticipation of the theatrical release, a clip of Tom Petty discussing the song “The Waiting” was shared on X on Thursday.
The documentary’s second and final scheduled day in theaters is this Sunday, a date that holds special significance as it would have been Tom Petty’s 74th birthday.
