Sonny & Cher: Are they Rock Hall worthy?

With Cher now a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she was recently asked if Sonny & Cher should also be inducted. Reflecting on their legacy, Cher stated that while they weren’t rock 'n roll, they represented music in a unique way. “We were kind of corny, but we were very avant garde for what was happening at the time,” she said. Despite her initial doubts about being inducted herself, Cher believes that Sonny & Cher deserve recognition for their contributions to music.

During her acceptance speech on Saturday, Cher humorously remarked that getting divorced from her two husbands, Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, was easier than getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Sonny Bono, who tragically passed away in a skiing accident in 1998, is not a member of the Hall. Cher’s comments highlight the challenges and mixed emotions she has faced regarding her induction.

Backstage, Cher addressed her previous criticisms of the Hall, admitting to a “love-hate relationship” with the institution. She candidly talked about her frustrations, questioning what it takes to be inducted. Despite these feelings, Cher’s induction on her first nomination marks a significant milestone in her career. She had been eligible since 1990, 25 years after the release of her first album, All I Really Want to Do.
