Elton John: Patience not his virtue

Recording the title track for his new album, ‘Who Believes in Angels?,’ was an emotional rollercoaster for Elton John. Collaborating with Brandi Carlile, Elton found himself overwhelmed with emotions, which led to some intense moments in the studio. He admitted to The Guardian, "I was very grumpy, I was tired, I didn’t feel well and I was extremely nervous. And that nervousness caused quite a few sparks to fly."

Brandi Carlile shared that those sparks several outbursts, such as smashing his iPad and headphones. "There were really amazing, classic Elton John outbursts. My lyrics got torn up and thrown on the ground. He would yell: “Predictable! Cliche!’” Despite the tension, Brandi understood that Elton didn't want to be put on a pedestal and was grappling with his own anxieties. She noted, "There was so much riding on my perception of Elton versus who Elton really is."

As the recording sessions progressed, Elton John began to relax and find his groove. He reflected, "It wasn’t me being anxious about other people, it was me being anxious about me. Once we got through the first three songs, we knew we had something. And I was much more relaxed … but I was a bit of a nightmare."

The album, Who Believes in Angels?, will be released on April 4th.
