Last Sunday, November 2nd, marked 55 years since The Rolling Stones’ legendary live album Get Yer Ya-Yas Out! went gold—only one month after its release in 1970. Recorded during their 1969 U.S. tour, including Thanksgiving night at Madison Square Garden, the album captured the band in their heyday at their gritty, electrifying best.
The album’s cover was pure rock ‘n roll madness: Charlie Watts mid-jump in a cheeky T-shirt, holding guitars, with a donkey nearby decked out in drums and a guitar. The tracklist is stacked with Stones classics including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Midnight Rambler,” and “Sympathy for the Devil.” Plus, moments like Mick Jagger joking about his busted pants or the fan yelling, “Paint it Black, you devil!”
Jagger still calls Ya-Yas his favorite Stones live album: “It was just a really good show… an exciting night and it was captured well.” Hard to disagree with that statement.
