Eiffel Tower Shuts Down When Dude Tries Climbing It

It’s a fine line between bad-ass and stupid, and yesterday one guy straddled it – and HARD. On one hand, having the sack to break through security and climb France’s Eiffel Tower is commendable. On the other hand, there are people who wait their whole lives to experience something as internationally significant, and those plans were ruined when the Tower had to be shut down and evacuated to apprehend the guy.

When the climber was spotted, social mediaposts announced his arrival to the world, giving him the attention he so desperately craved. The lock down started at 2:15pm local time. From there, the evacuation started, with people on the top floor stuck for a short lifetime, and a killer view’s only going to take you so far.

In all, it took seven hours before the daredevil was taken-in safely and the Tower was re-opened. The last time someone tried this stunt was in 2015, and it’s also been shut down other times for a couple of bomb threats in 2010 and 2013 and for two days in 2015 after the Paris terrorist attacks. There’s a protective glass wall around the base of it, but clearly more security’s going to be evaluated. Hopefully, the people who got screwed out of their visit at least got a refund and a free fridge magnet or something.
