Eight months after announcing he is retiring from the road, Elton John started his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour yesterday (Saturday).
Elton John on why he is retiring from touring:
“My priority is with my children. My career has been long and fantastic – I couldn’t imagine it would last this long. I’m not giving up writing, I’m not giving up recording, but I’m giving up schlepping as they say. And I’ve schlepped for a long time. And I just want to be with my boys. I mean it’s a very easy decision – do you want to carry on touring or do you want to spend more time with your children? No brainer. I love my children, they love me, I want to be there.”
The planning for this tour started in 2015.
Elton John talked about the production of his farewell tour and why he needs to do it:
“It’s gonna be the most produced fantastic show that I’ve ever done on the road. And, it’ll be a wonderful way to thank people. I’ve been touring since 1970 – that’s 49 years – and I’ve always managed to sell out concerts. So, it’s a way of saying thank you. And it’s a way of going out with a bang. I don’t want to go out with a whimper, I want to go out with a big bang.”
And of course, with a tour focused on his career, the question is what to play and what to leave out.
Elton said, “It’s difficult because people want to hear the hits, but you can’t just play the hits. I mean, I’m hoping that I’m gonna put in something like ‘My Father’s Gun,’ ‘Street Kids,’ which I haven’t done for years. Who knows? I mean I have a set list and then I have possibles to go in places and they are things that aren’t hits. You have to do that for your own sanity otherwise, you know, you go nuts.”
Elton plans to take the tour around the world with stops on every continent through 2021.
