Tiffany wants to be a real rock star

Tiffany says her new album should establish her as a legitimate rock and roller. The '80s teen pop star released Pieces of Me last month.

She tells Billboard, "This album is going to take me in a whole different direction." She introduced some of the harder-edge material on her last tour, and "people came up to me afterward and said, 'I didn't know you could sing like that'."

Tiffany, the first teen female artist ever to hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart, even admits, "I'm not happy being old-school Tiffany. No offense, I love that... That was my start, I'm grateful ..but that's not me today. I will always do the hits in my shows, because they're great songs, but from that, I've learned to write songs. It really made me raise the bar."

Tiffany's not completely cutting ties with her pop roots. She'll tour next summer with New Kids on the Block and '80s rival Debbie Gibson.
