Barbra Streisand's new single "Lady Liberty" balances patriotism with subtle protest.
A tribute to the Statue of Liberty, which was dedicated 132 years ago this week (October 28th, 1886), "Lady Liberty" takes a pro-immigrant stance, with lyrics such as "Tell the whole damn universe; There’s room for all of us and more... The real danger lies in the sound of silence."
In a video posted on Facebook, the singer-actress-activist notes that "the Statue of Liberty's proud torch is a shining beacon of light that has welcomed generations of men and women and children to our shores. And they came from different lands with different lands with different religions, languages and cultures. They came seeking the same American dream."
"Lady Liberty" is from Streisand's album Walls, which goes on sale Friday.
