Queen guitarist Brian May announced he would debut his new single from NASA’s control center in Maryland. The song is dedicated to their New Horizons mission, which achieved the most distant spacecraft flyby in history on New Year’s Day… which is also when May dropped the new track.
“New Horizons (Ultima Thule Mix)” is named after the mission and the mysterious space object around four billion miles from earth that was observed by the spacecraft. The song is May’s first new solo single in 20 years.
In a press conference prior to the launch, the guitarist talked about the making of the track. “I thought, ‘This is probably gonna be hard because I can’t think of anything that rhymes with Ultima Thule,’” he joked. “But then I went away and I could hear some music of an object plummeting through space faster than anything’s ever been launched away from this Earth, and I got kind of inspired.” Check out the song and clip of the press conference to the right.
