The Isley Brothers remembered their friend Aretha Franklin during Sunday night's show in Detroit.
It was a tearful moment at Motor City Casino when Ronald Isley, who sang at Franklin's funeral, introduced the song "Jesus Loves Me." He told the crowd, "I thought she was the best singer I ever heard in my life."
Isley called Aretha "my best friend in show business from that day in 1959 all the way up to 2018" and recalled how they "used to stay up all night and talk about Sam Cooke." He also thanked the Queen of Soul for tipping him off to Whitney Houston.
Younger brother Ernie Isley provided his signature fuzz guitar on "That Lady" and "Voyage to Atlantis." The brothers also reached back to the start of their pop career 60 years ago, with a bluesy take on their breakthrough song, "Shout." (Oakland [MI] Press)
