When actor Taron Egerton signed on to play Elton John in the bio-pic Rocketman, he says he was "given license to go and make him look ugly at times."
Last week during a sneak preview of the film's highlights at Abbey Road Studios in London, Egerton said, "The movie begins with Elton marching into rehab in a real bad way. We learn about his life from him recounting his experiences from this recovery room."
Director Dexter Fletcher adds that Elton has "always been very honest and open" about his life and had "nothing to hide... That's part of the strength of the film. It's not self-serving in that way."
Egerton says rehab. "leads to a certain quality of openness and candidness. This movie is primarily a celebration of his life and work -- but it's also a story about someone who's not well becoming well."
Rocketman opens in theaters on May 31st.
