Should a straight actor have been chosen to portray Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman?
Taron Egerton, who plays Sir Elton in the film, which comes next month, has come under fire from some critics for doing so, and is now answering questions about his fitness for the part.
The actor, whose best known for the Kingmaker films, tells GQ that he approached his role "wholeheartedly" and that he hopes that "for that reason people accept me [as Elton]. The LGBTQ community has always been about inclusiveness, hasn’t it? Not about, ‘We’re here. You’re there.’ In fact, if you want to come in, come on in.”
Egerton explains that the movie covers "a fairly revolutionary time” when “men were more outlandish." He says that when he was growing up "we didn’t have role models like that...Sometimes, I think I’m from a time gone by, born too late.”
Egerton has also drawn praise in some quarters for both looking and sounding like Elton, which makes him very happy. "This film feels like me finally going to the world: here I am.”
