Doobie Brothers set to play album show in their hometown

The Doobie Brothers will play a complete album show in their hometown.

Using the successful formula from last fall's New York shows, where they performed Toulouse Street and The Captain and Me in their entirety, they'll take the stage at the Masonic Theater in San Francisco on September 12th.

Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers talked about relearning songs for their complete album shows:

"Mostly, it's like going back to play a song that you've never played live except in a studio many years ago. First, we all sat down as individuals: learning lyrics, chord changes, picking parts, solos, harmonies. There's a lot involved."

Tom Johnston says many of The Doobie Brothers less familiar songs are complicated:

"I was amazed at how many of the words I actually kinda did remember. But when you get to playing them live with the whole band, that can go away sometimes. Some of these songs had a lot of lyrics on 'em. A song like 'Captain and Me,' for instance, there's a bunch of lyrics to that song. So you've got to remember all those words, while you're playing guitar, on a part you're not used to playing at all. Getting all that to coalesce, live, is very different from playing a song that you've been playing for years and you already know it."
