Bernie Taupin handrwitten lyrics from Elton's first album up for auction

Bernie Taupin’s handwritten lyrics to “Skyline Pigeon” from Elton John’s first album, Empty Sky, are being auctioned along with letters from Elton and Taupin discussing the song.

Elton writes that he felt it has “stood the test of time” and that the issues raised in it of freedom and liberty will “always be significant.” And Bernie adds that it’s the first song that “truly defined Elton and my direction as songwriters.”

The lyrics are being sold by former MCA Records chairman/CEO Al Teller with the proceeds going to various charities, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Heritage Auctions is handling the sale on Saturday and the minimum bid is $10,000.
