A California University is using one program to attempt an amazing feat - grow the perfect avocado.
A program at UC Riverside aims to cultivate the perfect California avocado. The goal of the university's avocado breeding program is to figure out how people describe the flavor of a good avocado, and what components in the fruit contribute to that perceived flavor. Trained participants spend an hour every Tuesday and Thursday morning evaluating avocado samples.
The study focuses on two varieties of avocado: Hass and GEM. The avocado shortage in California has made the country more reliant on Mexican avocados and the idea is to change that.
