Elton John is celebrating a milestone this week.
He says, "29 years ago today, I was a broken man. I finally summoned up the courage to say three words that would change my life: 'I need help.' Thank you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful."
During our recent interview with Elton, he told us he hit bottom in 1988 and '89.
Elton John talked about hitting rock bottom and asking for help with his addiction to drugs and alcohol:
"Took me a long time to ask for it, but for me, it's just wonderful to see that I don't have to do that anymore. It's like, I did this, it was part and parcel of who I became and I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't gone through that and survived and then learnt a different way of life. So, in a way, I had to go through that to become the person I am today. But, looking at it, I wish I didn't have to have gone through that. My advice to anybody is do not touch drugs. Even weed. It's so strong nowadays it's ridiculous."
Elton is on his annual summer break at his home in the South of France. He resumes his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour on September 4th in Salt Lake City, Utah.
