Mike Love gives a fresh spin to several Beach Boys classics on his album 12 Sides of Summer -- including the band's very first single.
He credits producer Sam Hollander for "reimagining" "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari" -- and working on the new original "California Beach."
"'Surfin,' we recorded our first song that ever hit the airwaves, in October of 1961, re-imagined by Sam Hollander, the fellow who was very successful with Panic at the Disco, lately. And he was a blast to work with. And we did 'Surfin' Safari' with him as well. As well as 'California Beach'."
The Beach Boys shared a bill with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band on Saturday at the Ravinia Festival in suburban Chicago.
