Beatles album photographer Robert Freeman has died

Robert Freeman, who shot the cover photos for The BeatlesMeet The Beatles and Rubber Soul albums, has died at 82. The Londoner also designed the end credits for the group's first two films as well as graphics and photography used in movie posters.

Paul McCartney remembered Freeman as "imaginative and a true original thinker."

An accident, in which the proposed photo for Rubber Soul fell backward, led to the album's unusual "stretched" effect. Paul notes, "Instead of simply putting the [image] upright again, we became excited at the idea of this new version of his photograph... He assured us that it was possible to print it this way and because the album was titled Rubber Soul we felt the image fitted perfectly."

The image for Meet the Beatles was shot in a hotel dining room in Bournemouth, England in August 1963. Freeman was paid 75 pounds for his work.
