Barry Gibb opens up about his love of country music

Barry Gibb was a big fan of country music long before he became famous with his brothers.

During a Rolling Stone video chat with Jason Isbell promoting the soon-to-be-released album Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1, Barry says, "After The Bee Gees no longer existed, I drifted into my own bliss, which is this kind of music."

Isbell, who actually did a duet with Barry on the unreleased '80s track "Words of a Fool," explains he was "nervous" before recording with Barry. Maybe intimidated was a better term, as he admits, "I think you got your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just a couple months after I was born. So I’ve known about your music my whole life."

Barry explains that when he and his brothers grew up in Australia, they heard a real connection between country music and early rock and roll: [courtesy - Rolling Stone]

"We heard so many records from America, not necessarily from England -- but from America where mostly, music was country music. And it was Roy Orbison and it was Elvis. And these were country stars, but they were also rock stars. And that's where it crept into our lives. So country music in general, George Jones, Dolly... any of these people had a radical influence on us."

Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1 will be released on January 8th.The documentary The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart debuts this Saturday night on HBO Max.
