After three years on the run,Lola the service dog is back home with her grateful family. Debra and Steven Mejeur were visiting friends in Illinois when the black Labrador mix escaped from a fenced-in backyard. The couple from Kalamazoo, Michigan, searched for Lola for days before returning home and for months they traveled back to Illinois to look for her, but had no luck.
Debra, who has epilepsy, says, “Every time we left Chicago to come back to Michigan, I felt like I was abandoning her and leaving her behind.” She joined every Facebook group in the area where their friends lived and tried to track Lola down, but three years went by without a clue. Then, out of the blue, Debra got a call from Lola’s microchip company saying she’d been found in Illinois, about 15-miles from where she disappeared.
It turns out, another couple had been feeding Lola for over a year before they were able to get a leash on her and bring her to animal services, where her microchip was found. They believe she was living in the woods on her own for all that time, but she’s now been reunited with Debra and Steven and they say it’s like she never left.
