Prince was just 11 years old in early television footage recently discovered by a Minneapolis TV station.
WCCO-TV was recently sifting through its film archives of a 1970 teacher's strike to use for coverage in an educators strike that happened in the same school district in March of this year. After the video was restored, the station's production manager happened upon what looked like Prince being interviewed by a local reporter.
The station tracked down Terrance Jackson, who was a childhood friend of Prince’s since kindergarten and also a member of Prince’s first band, Grand Central. While watching the video, Jackson first recognized another child from his neighborhood and remarked, “That is Prince! Standing right there with the hat on, right? That’s Skipper! Oh my God!” (“Skipper” was actually Prince’s childhood nickname.)
In the clip a reporter asked Prince if most of the kids are in favor of the teachers’ strike. 11-year old Prince replied "Yup” and then added, “I think they should get a better education too cause, and I think they should get some more money cause they work, they be working extra hours for us and all that stuff."
