Tony Basil has officially won the rights to her signature 80’s hit "Mickey" and the album it's featured on, ‘Word of Mouth,’ following a court battle of more than 10 years.
Variety reported that the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit Court has ruled in favor of Basil by affirming a lower court decision issued back in 2019. Basil had filed a copyright termination notice in 2013 to reclaim the album from the Radialchoice record label.
Back in 2016 Stillwater Limited, based in the U.K., bought Radialchoice’s rights and filed a lawsuit to toss the copyright termination, which would only have given Toni about 50% ownership.
After the ruling, Basil can reissue Word of Mouth and "Mickey," which have both been out of print while the lawsuits have been ongoing. Basil did re-record the song and streamed it back in 2020. The song was originally released in 1982 and the video was an early MTV staple.
