ABBA made their first public appearance in 14 years Thursday night at the London premiere of their digital show, ‘Voyage,’ the show that features avatar versions of the legendary group’s four members--also known as "Abba-tars".
The members of ABBA performed in motion capture suits for five weeks, with a setup of 160 cameras which scanned body movements and facial expressions to create the “Abba-tars.”However, what will be seen in 2022 is actually how ABBA looked in their 70’s heyday. The group’s members appear in 2D in a theater specifically set up for the production, and the light effects and back projections provide the audience with depth of field, which makes them look as though they’re actually on stage.
The band watched the performance and then appeared for a curtain call on stage afterwards. Those in attendance included Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife Silvia, singers Kylie Minogue, Jarvis Cocker along with actress Keira Knightley.
Voyage opens to the public tonight (Friday) and it’s scheduled to run through December.
