Last Friday was the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Elton John marked the anniversary by following up on a pledge he made to Ukranians 15 years ago.
Sir Elton says, "On a perfect Spring evening in 2007, looking out at a 300,000 strong crowd, I made a promise to the people of Ukraine that I would do everything I could to help end their AIDS crisis. One year on from Russia launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, [my husband] David Furnish and I are heartbroken to see the devastation continue to destroy lives.”
He added, "In addition to the huge loss of life and disruption, Ukraine’s impressive advances in ending its HIV epidemic have been put at risk. That’s why I am pleased to announce new funding has been given through the Elton John AIDS Foundation for the country to ensure progress is not lost, and to support continued efforts to deliver vital services to people living or at risk of HIV."
Elton also wrote an op-ed last Thursday in The Guardian.
