Classic Hits Spotlight: Rod Stewart's 'disco' hit

Rod Stewart spent four weeks at #1 in February and March of 1979 with his classic “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.” Rod’s rock ‘n roll fans accused him of “selling out to disco” with the song.Rod wanted the song to resemble The Rolling Stones’ hit “Miss You.”

The song was featured on Rod’s album ‘Blondes Have More Fun.’ Rod Stewart’s drummer Carmine Appice co-wrote the song and he’s the one who said Rod wanted the song to closely resemble “Miss You.”

Carmine said, "He [Rod Stewart] said, 'I want a song like this.' And he pointed to 'Missing You' by The Stones. I said, 'OK.' I had a little keyboard in my house and I had a little drum machine and I went home and I started messing around with some chords and some melodies. Hey, you can't complain. It went to number-one in 10 countries."

The song’s other writer, Duane Hitchings, said Stewart considered the song a “spoof on disco.” Rod donated the song’s royalties to UNICEF.
