Rick Astley took his first hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” to #1 in the spring of our feature year 1988. Astley was only 22 years old when that song made him a superstar in the U.S.
Rick Astley first broke into the music business working as a studio assistant and tape operator for a production team. “Never Gonna Give You Up” was inspired by a co-worker one of the song’s producers was dating at the time.
Rick Astley talked about how early in his career he looked too young to have such a powerful voice. He said, "A bit shocking for people to see a guy who looks like 12 years old with red hair, but had the voice I kinda... have and what... it just didn't go together. So I think the video and the song coupled together is kind of like a moment."
