Starship took “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” to #1 the first two weeks of April in 1987. The song was featured in the 80’s movie ‘Mannequin,’ and it was nominated for an Oscar for ‘Best Song.’
The Oscar ultimately went to “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from ‘Dirty Dancing,’ but “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” did become one of the biggest movie hits of the decade. It featured Grace Slick on lead vocals.
Grace and Mickey Thomas were the only members of Starship on the record. They were backed up by session singers. That song made Grace Slick (who was 47 at the time) the oldest woman to have a #1 single in the U.S. Cher broke that record 12 years later when she hit #1 at age 52 with “Believe.”
We’re talking about ultimate high school movies on the Big Show this morning. What was your favorite movie from your high school days? “Manequin” was a great date movie in the late 80’s with Andrew McCarthy and a young Kim Cattrall.
