After spending years remixing The Beatles' catalog, producer Giles Martin has turned to his attention to The Beach Boys.
The group approached Martin about remixing their 1966 classic Pet Sounds album into Dolby Atmos, and the remixed album was released through Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited and Tidal last Friday.
Martin was given full access to the original analog tapes, along with Brian Wilson's original mono mix, along with reissue producer Mark Linett's 1997 stereo mix to guide him in the process.
Martin said, "It's a fascinating record because it's really the workings of a genius, Brian Wilson, that sort of had boundless enthusiasm for ideas and textures. Moving Pet Sounds to Dolby Atmos means those worlds can be fully immersive, you can be surrounded by them, you can hear instruments that you never heard before, that are on the record, but they are now in a space where you can identify them."
There’s a video up on YouTube that features Martin talking about the Atmos mix of the album.
