Cher is ready to spread some holiday cheer with her first Christmas album, which will be released on October 20th. The legendary singer has shared the first track from the album, titled "DJ Play a Christmas Song," a catchy tune that urges the DJ to play some festive music.
The song is one of the four originals on the album, which is simply called Christmas. Cher told Billboard that she had no intention of doing a Christmas album, but Warner Records persuaded her to do it on her own terms. “I said if I can do my version I’ll do it, and they were very pleasant,” she said.
Cher also revealed that she wanted to avoid the traditional Christmas songs that everyone has heard before. "Everybody’s gotten ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ and all that. I just said to them, ‘There will be Christmas songs and they’ll be appropriate, but I want to do what I feel,’” she said.
The album features 13 tracks, including some covers of songs like “Santa Baby,” “Run Rudolph Run” and “Please Come Home for Christmas.” Cher also collaborated with some of her musical friends, such as Stevie Wonder on his 1967 song “What Christmas Means to Me”; Michael Buble on his 2005 hit “Home”; Cyndi Lauper on “Put a Little Holiday in Your Heart” and Darlene Love on “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home).” Cher has a special connection with Love, as she sang backing vocals on the 1963 Phil Spector-produced classic when she was 17.
The album artwork shows Cher in a red dress and a Santa hat, holding a microphone and smiling.
