Keith Richards has revealed that Mick Jagger's interest in the songs is crucial for the quality of the new Rolling Stones album, ‘Hackney Diamonds,’ which is set to be released on October 20th.
In an interview with the BBC, Richards said that Jagger, who is the lead singer and co-writer of most of the songs, can make a song go "bad" if he is not into it.
"From my point of view, the essential thing about making a record is that the singer has to want to sing the material. Mick, given a song that he's not interested in, can really make it bad. And that’s maybe one of the reasons it took 18 years because Mick’s waves of enthusiasm come and go," Richards said.
The guitarist also said that he was happy that Jagger wanted to work on new material after their last tour, which ended in 2022. "He hit me in the right spot. I’ve always wanted to record the band as soon after we get off of the road because the band is lubricated," Richards said.
Hackney Diamonds is the 25th studio album by the Rolling Stones and their first since 2005's A Bigger Bang. It features 12 new songs. The album was recorded at various locations, including London, New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. It was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins, which is the pseudonym of Jagger and Richards.
The Rolling Stones are planning to tour in support of the album in 2024, marking their 60th anniversary as a band.
