Cher preps 'Christmas' comeback with a voice coach

Cher is ready to spread some holiday cheer with her new album, ‘Christmas,’ which is out today. The album is her first since her 2018 ABBA covers set, ‘Dancing Queen,’ and features her rendition of classic and contemporary Christmas songs.

Before hitting the studio, the pop icon had to make sure her voice was in top shape, as she had not sung in years. She tells the New York Times that she hired a voice coach, Adrienne Angel, who has been teaching her since her 40s.

"I haven’t sung in years. So I call my unbelievable teacher, Adrienne Angel, who I love like the sun and the moon. She’s 96; she’s been my teacher since my 40s … I just wanted it to sound like my voice. I didn’t want to have to lower any keys. That’s always the dead giveaway," Cher says.

The 77-year-old singer says she was pleased with the results, and so was her doctor, who praised her vocal cords.

"My doctor said I have the vocal cords of a 25-year-old girl. I mean, look, you don’t usually have a very great voice at 77, right? But it seems like a lot of us are having some sort of resurgence. I don’t know what it is. Revenge of the old people," Cher jokes.

Christmas is Cher's 27th studio album, and marks her return to the genre after 2000's Not.com.mercial, which included a song called "The Christmas Song". The new album features 12 tracks, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Jingle Bells", "Santa Baby", and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)".

Cher says she hopes her fans will enjoy her festive gift, and that she plans to perform some of the songs live on her upcoming tour.

"I love Christmas songs. They make me happy. And I hope they make you happy too," Cher says.
