What about the future of The Rolling Stones after Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are gone? Could they follow the example of ABBA and perform as avatars?
That question was raised by Jagger himself in an interview with The Wall Street Journal earlier this month. He said, “You can have a posthumous business now, can’t you? You can have a posthumous tour. The technology has really moved on since the ABBA thing [their Voyage avatar show in London], which I was supposed to go to, but I missed it.”
When Richards was asked about Jagger's comments, he seemed less enthusiastic about the idea. He said, "I hadn't gone that far yet. I ain't dying yet. But I understand Mick will always be thinking of things and bless his heart."
However, in a more recent interview on Apple Music 1, Richards sounded more open to the possibility of an avatar show. He said, "Well, I certainly wouldn't rule it out. I'm pretty sure that it is bound to happen. Do I want it? Now, that's another thing. But I don't know if I want to hang around that long enough, man. But at the same time, it won't be up to me, will it?"
It seems that the legendary rockers are not ready to retire anytime soon, but they are also aware of the potential of technology to keep their legacy alive. Whether they will ever perform as avatars remains to be seen, but for now, fans can enjoy their new album and their Instagram lens.
