Brad Whitford, Aerosmith’s rhythm guitarist, has expressed his frustration with the band's reluctance to record new music. In an interview with Guitar World, he said that he thinks their recording days are behind them, and that he says it’s "out-and-out laziness."
Whitford said that he had suggested to his bandmates a simple and easy way to create new songs, by booking a studio for one day and jamming together with no pressure or expectations. He said that he did not care if the singer Steven Tyler just sang gibberish, as long as they tried to be creative. However, he said that his idea was rejected by the others, who said that they could not do it. He said that he was shocked by their response, and that he gave up on trying to convince them.
Whitford also said that he was not happy with the band's last studio album of new material, Music from Another Dimension, which was released in 2012. He said that he thought it was a "piss-poor record" that lacked the spirit and vibe that made Aerosmith great. He said that his favorite album by the band was Rocks, which came out in 1976. He said that he felt that Rocks was the defining moment for the band, and that he wished they could recapture that energy.
Whitford and Aerosmith are currently waiting for Tyler's fractured larynx to heal, which has forced them to postpone their Peace Out farewell tour. Whitford said that he hopes to resume the tour soon, and that he still loves playing live with the band. He said that he does not know if they will ever record new music again, but that he would love to do it if they were willing.
