A group of AC/DC fans have launched a campaign to get the band's hit song "Thunderstruck" to the top of the U.K. chart for Christmas. The campaign is part of the celebration of the band's 50th anniversary, which falls in November.
The fans are members of the Facebook group AC/DC We Salute You, which has over 100,000 followers. They have chosen "Thunderstruck" as their candidate for the Christmas number-one, a coveted spot in the U.K. music industry. The song was released in 1990 and is one of the band's most popular and recognizable songs.
The organizers of the campaign say, "We are all going to download/stream this 1990 classic to see if we can put AC/DC to the top of the U.K. Christmas Chart to celebrate 50 years of the band!"
The campaign will run from Friday, December 15th to Thursday, December 21st, which is the period that determines the Christmas Official U.K. Charts. The fans hope to beat the competition from other artists and songs that are vying for the festive honor.
This is not the first time that AC/DC fans have attempted to get the band a number-one song in the U.K. In 2013, they launched a similar campaign for their 40th anniversary with the goal of getting "Highway to Hell" to the top of the chart. The song reached number-four, which was the band's highest position ever in the U.K.
The fans were inspired by a previous fan-driven campaign that succeeded in getting Rage Against the Machine's "Killing In the Name" to the Christmas number-one spot in 2009, beating the winner of the reality show The X Factor.
AC/DC was formed in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young in Sydney, Australia.
