David Lee Roth has released another song from his May 3rd, 2022, session at Henson Studio in Hollywood, California. The song is a re-recording of Van Halen's 1984 hit "Jump", which features Roth's signature vocals and a new arrangement.
The session was a tribute to Roth's former bandmate and guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, who passed away in 2020. Roth played 14 songs in two hours, saying that the music and vocals were tracked live with "no samples" and without Auto-Tune pitch correction software. He wanted to capture the raw energy and spirit of Van Halen's live performances.
This time out it's a re-recording of Van Halen's "Jump" to go along with the previously released VH covers from that day of "Unchained," "Everybody Wants Some!!," (their cover of The Kinks') "You Really Got Me," "Dance the Night Away," "Panama," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." These songs span the band's career from their debut album in 1978 to their sixth album in 1984, when Roth left the band for a solo career.
Backing Roth are guitarist Al Estrada, bassist Ryan Wheeler, and drummer Francis Valentino. Estrada is a member of the Van Halen tribute band Eruption, and he does a remarkable job of emulating Eddie's style and sound. Wheeler and Valentino are also seasoned musicians who provide a solid rhythm section for Roth's vocals.
Roth says his re-recordings of Van Halen's classics are a testament to his love and respect for Eddie and the band's legacy. They are also a treat for the fans who miss the original lineup and the magic they created on stage and in the studio.
