Bryan Adams talks about friendship with Princess Diana

Bryan Adams has revealed some details about his close relationship with the late Princess Diana, whom he described as "an amazing woman and a super-great inspiration."

In an interview with England's Sunday Times, Adams said he met Diana on a plane and told her about his 1984 song "Diana," which was a cheeky tribute to her marriage to Prince Charles. Diana found the song "very funny" and asked him to send her a copy. He did, and she invited him for tea at Kensington Palace.

Adams said their friendship grew over time and he learned more about her personal struggles. "When I first went round to Kensington Palace she wasn't like, 'I really need to talk to somebody,' and you don't bulldoze into someone's life wanting to know everything in the first 10 minutes. It was 'let's have a cup of tea.' But later the more friendly we got, the more I learnt what was really going on," he said.

The song "Diana" featured lyrics such as "The day that he married you -- I nearly lost my mind" and "You've got one choice -- you can get away. Leave it up to me. I'll bring the ladder -- if you bring your limousine." Adams said the song was "laddish humor" and he was inspired by "that guy who [had] broken into the Queen's bedroom and sat on her bed smoking a cigarette" in 1982.

Adams and Diana were rumored to have had an affair, but he never confirmed or denied it. His ex-girlfriend, Cecilie Thomsen, claimed in 2003 that "ours was a stormy relationship and Bryan's affair with Diana didn't make it any easier."

Adams said meeting Diana was "truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me" and he still admired her as "the queen of all my dreams."

Adams, who has been one of the few artists to be welcomed into the Royal Family's inner circle, released a new album last Friday. Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a box set of his 2022 three-night stand at the London venue.
