Taylor Swift is known for her clever and personal songwriting, but sometimes she also draws inspiration from other sources. One of them might be Paul McCartney, who apparently influenced one of her songs on her 2022 album ‘Midnights.’
The song in question is "Sweet Nothing", a romantic ballad that Swift co-wrote with her then boyfriend Joe Alwyn. The song was widely assumed to be about their relationship, but a recent discovery by some eagle-eyed fans suggests that McCartney might have also played a role.
In October 2023, Swift "liked" a post on Instagram by an account called Paul McCartney Archive. The post showed a picture of McCartney and his late wife Linda, along with a caption that quoted a poem that McCartney wrote for Linda called "Blessed". The caption read: "I would come back from a run with a poem to share and having listened Linda would say 'what a mind.'"
Interestingly, the lyrics of "Sweet Nothing" contain a very similar line: "On the way home/ I wrote a poem/ You say, 'What a mind'/ This happens all the time." This has led some Swifties to speculate that Swift's "like" was her way of subtly acknowledging that McCartney's poem inspired her song.
This would not be the first time that Swift and McCartney have shown admiration for each other's work. In 2020, Swift interviewed McCartney for Rolling Stone, and they discussed their songwriting process, their albums, and their fans. McCartney also revealed that his 2018 song "Who Cares" was partly inspired by Swift's relationship with her fans, and how she encourages them to be themselves.
Whether or not McCartney actually inspired "Sweet Nothing" remains a mystery, but it is clear that the two artists share a mutual respect and appreciation for each other's music. Perhaps one day, they will collaborate on a song together, and create a masterpiece that will delight both Swifties and Beatles fans alike.
