Elton John may have said goodbye to the road in 2023, but he is not slowing down anytime soon. The legendary singer-songwriter has announced a slew of new projects for 2024, including a new album, a documentary, two musicals and more.
In a year-end message to his fan club, Elton revealed that he recorded a new album in the fall, with lyrics by his longtime partner Bernie Taupin. The album, which will be released this year, will be his first with Taupin since 2016’s Wonderful Crazy Night, and his first since The Lockdown Sessions in 2021, which featured collaborations with various artists.
Elton also shared that he is working on a documentary with Disney+ titled Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years That Made His Legend. The documentary will chronicle his farewell tour, which spanned over 300 shows across five continents, as well as his life and career.
In addition, Elton has two musicals headed to London's West End -- Tammy Faye and The Devil Wears Prada. Tammy Faye is based on the life of the controversial televangelist, while The Devil Wears Prada is an adaptation of the popular novel and film about the fashion industry.
While fans wait for the dates and details of these four projects, they can look forward to seeing Elton in Los Angeles on March 10th for his annual Academy Awards-viewing party, which benefits his AIDS Foundation. The event, which will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will feature a live performance by Elton and special guests.
Elton concluded his message by thanking his fans for their support and loyalty. “The greatest thing about [2023] has been you guys, who’ve supported me, come to the shows, bought the records, and keep flying the Elton John name very, very highly. I can’t thank you enough … I will be in touch [in the New Year!” he said.
Elton also proved that he still loves to perform, as he did several gigs after wrapping up his farewell tour on July 8th in Stockholm, Sweden. He played at the opening of a water park in the Dominican Republic; at a birthday party in Nashville; at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Brooklyn, New York in tribute to Bernie Taupin; and at a fundraiser in Venice, Italy.
