Don McLean released his new album, American Boys, last Friday. With the title track, McLean says he has come full circle in his career. The album is a tribute to the roots of rock and roll, a genre that McLean believes was invented in America.
He reflects on the origins of rock and roll, citing how blues records carried by Keith Richards were not from blues players who lived in London, but from those who lived in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and elsewhere. McLean emphasizes that America invented the blues, rock and roll, and jazz, and these genres are an integral part of American history.
McLean also said American Boys could be his last record. He believes it's important for Americans to realize their rich musical heritage, and this album serves as his "last word on it." When asked why he thinks this will be his last album, McLean candidly expressed, "I don't belong really in the world the way it is now. I've done my thing." T
This is McLean’s 21st studio album and his first since 2020's Still Playin' Favorites.
