The decades-long musical partnership between Daryl Hall and John Oates seems to be ending publicly, following a lawsuit filed by Hall against Oates. The dispute arose over Oates' attempt to sell his share of their publishing to Primary Wave. However, according to Hall, the rift between them had been growing for some time. He revealed to Billboard that Oates had expressed a desire to leave the duo even before the lawsuit.
Hall and Oates had not been creatively involved for decades, with their last collaborative song dating back to 2000. Despite this, they continued to tour, a situation that Hall found restrictive. The real turning point came when Oates decided he no longer wanted to be part of the duo. While Hall accepted this decision, he has stated that Oates made the parting and subsequent breakup difficult, leading to ongoing issues.
Despite the challenges, Hall sees a silver lining in the situation. He considers himself a solo artist who was merely working with Oates. Being on his own has been liberating for him, allowing him to perform all the songs he wrote over the years, both under his own name and the Hall & Oates name. In fact, Daryl recently released a new album, "D", his first since 2011's "Laughing Down Crying".
The lawsuit against Oates remains unresolved.
