This Tuesday, June 25th, we remember the 15th anniversary of the untimely death of Michael Jackson, who passed away at the age of 50. While in the midst of preparing for a series of concerts in London, Jackson tragically died in his home in Holmby Hills, California. His death was the result of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, administered by his physician to aid his sleep. The death was later ruled a homicide, leading to the conviction of Dr. Conrad Murray for involuntary manslaughter.
Born on August 20th, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson was the fifth of six brothers. He first rose to fame as part of the family group, The Jackson 5. Their first four singles -- "I Want You Back," "A-B-C," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There" -- all reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. Jackson's solo debut came in 1979 with Off the Wall, which featured hits like "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."
However, it was the 1982 album Thriller that catapulted Jackson to superstardom. With iconic tracks such as "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and the title track, "Thriller," the album left an indelible mark on the music industry.
Jackson also spearheaded the star-studded "We Are the World" charity single for famine relief in 1985. Despite the success of later albums like 1987's Bad and 2001's Invincible, none could replicate the unprecedented success of Thriller. We’re remembering the legacy of one of the most enduring singers of all time.
