Elton John has often credited his success to his longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin. Recognizing the significant role Taupin has played in his career, a documentary is now being produced to tell Taupin's story. The film will dive into the roots of Taupin's creativity, shedding light on the man who has been instrumental in shaping John's musical journey.
The documentary features interviews with many renowned personalities including Elton John, Ringo Starr, Annie Lennox, Pete Townshend, James Hetfield of Metallica, Alice Cooper, and Brandi Carlile. Archival content will also be used to provide a comprehensive view of Taupin's life and career. Director Matthew Miele emphasizes the unique dynamic between John and Taupin, saying, "I think many people are unaware that the phenomenon that is Elton John is really two people."
Despite his initial reservations, Taupin is cooperating with the film. He admits, “Reticent as I am to scrutiny, this project has been enlightening both on an emotional and analytical level. The originality of all parties involved has made participating in it much easier as I loosen my grip on the cards I hold closest to my chest.”
As we wait for this film, Elton John's new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
